Our Story

In 1907, a great decision was made by some noble men and women of Faith. That decision was to organize the  Mount Calvary Baptist Church in what was then known as the Town of Brookstown, Louisiana. This brief history will not be detailed with specifics or with all incidents that lead to the development of this historical church. Our main concern is that one-hundred years ago spirit-filled men of God saw a need for an organized and dedicated place for worship in this community. One thing we are sure of and that is time was far from easy for African-Americans in 1907, however; through prayers and sacrifices this place of worship was established for the worshipping of God,
our Creator.

As you can note in the Mount Calvary Baptist Church Pastoral Tree, we have been blessed with seven shepherds from 1907 until 2007 (present). Records indicate that the following persons names are on the original document recorded in the St. James Parish Courthouse in St. James Parish  as on January 9, 1907. In fact, this document was signed by the following persons:  Joshua Jones, Michael Harris, Thomas Washington, Jake Nelson, Charles Batson, George Hooper, Harry Fisher, Simon
Richard, and Homer Richard, Jr. The Notary Public was Henry L. Himel. There have been many repairs, renovations, and rebuilding of the Church’s Edifice but the focus and the mission is the same to serve God and humanity.

Ministers who pastored from 1907 until now are Rev. Harry Ross born in 1849 and died in 1906. Rev. Henry Trihbet who pastored Mt. Calvary and later pastored Buena Vista Baptist Church was born in 1899 and died in1987. Rev. George Hooper pastored Mt. Calvary as well. Rev. Daniel Jones also pastored for many years. He was born in 1899 and died November 24, 1961. Rev. Ernest Landry pastored for several years. He was born October,1907 and died on August 24, 1981. Rev.  John Harris pastored Mt. Calvary also. He was born in 1909 and died in 1995. Through the years the church has weathered may hardships and storms, but Thanks be to God, under the humble and illustrious Pastor, Rev. Samuel Jones since 1996 it has been proven “We’ve come this far by Faith,
leaning on the Lord and trusting in His holy words and He has never failed us yet --- Because we’ve come this far by faith!!!!

“So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
